I had a sense of this problem today when society where I live in tried to pass a resolution barring bachelors from renting in the society. While this appears a solution to problems created by bachelors, it points to a deeper malaise afflicting us. From an open society we are trying to shut ourselves and making a discrimination against bachelors because of perceived problems created by bachelors. Problems that housing societies see with bachelors are as follows -
1) Loud noise on weekends due to weekend parties which often go late in night.
2) Lot of visitors who often do not sign the entry register.
3) Moral aspects like late night visitors.
4) Ill use of housing society facilities.
All these problems are genuine and faced by lot of societies. While this may give thought to barring bachelors from even start renting in housing societies, this is not correct for following reasons -
1) Discrimination against particular group of people is not correct.
2) This move will limit choice of flat owners about who can live in their premise; the decision which is best left to the owner of the flat/house and not to a housing society.
3) This move, if adopted by more and more housing societies, will create shortage of accommodation to not only students but also to working class bachelors. This group of people will be alienated from rest of the city/society.
4) Long term, this will lead to intolerance among section of societies; between flat owners versus renters, between have and have-not.
In general, bachelors can follow simple rules of housing societies they live in and create a harmonious environment. Housing societies on their part can be more tolerant for small incidents and allow anyone who is willing to follow rules, live in the premises. This is win-win situation for all.
